There are no bones of the spinal cord, itself, though there are bones that surround it. They are called your vertebrae. All of them put together are referred to as the vertebral column and are divided into: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal vertebrae.

There are no bones in the spinal cord - the spinal cord is the nerve trunk that connect the brain to the rest of the body.

However, there are typically 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral and 4 coccygeal vertebrae of the spinal column for a total of 33 vertebrae. Please note the five sacral and four coccygeal vertebrae are fused within the pelvis.

The spinal cord is protected by the vertebral column or spinal column. The vertebral column is a collection of individual bones called vertebrae that encase and protect the spinal cord. The vertebral column is divided into three parts: seven cervical (neck) vertebrae at the top, twelve thoracic vertebrae in the midback, and five lumbar vertebrae in the lower back. Below the lumbar vertebrae, but not protecting the spinal cord, are the sacrum and coccyx (tailbone).

The vertebral column is the tower of vertebral bones typically called the "spine" by laymen. The spine is in fact the amalgamation of the two.
