There are several types of medication for HIV that are designed to do different things. In essenece, the medications either slow down the replication process of the virus and/or help boost the immune system. This means that the person with HIV will see a drop in their viral count (the number of HIV viral cells in their blood stream) and perhaps an increase in their T-cells (white blood cells that are attacked by the HIV virus).

None of the medications kill the virus itself. At best, they are slowing it down, allowing people to live longer.
