The diaphragm is a muscle, so when the body has to take up air into the lungs the diaphragm expands causing the pleural cavity to expand and therefore causing air to rush into the lungs when the human body expells air the diaphragm constricts and pushes up causing air to be expelled.

The diaphragm is a broad flat sheet separating the thoracic and abdominal cavities. When that contracts, it flattens and opens up the lungs increasing their volume. When the volume goes up, the pressure goes down and air flows into the lungs.

Similarly, the external intercostals contract opening up the ribcage outward. The same volume/pressure effect goes on.
