Arteries carry oxygenated blood to small distribution capillaries where the nutrients in the blood are absorbed by the cells throughout your body. The cell 'trades' oxygen for its carbon dioxide waste which is then carried back to the heart and lungs for re-oxygenation. Basically you breath in stuff that goes into your lungs where the blood takes it to hungry cells, and you breath out the unwanted stuff that comes from it. The arteries are just transport tubes for the blood.

Arteries are what allow blood to flow throughout the body. Blood brings oxygen and other nutrients to different parts of the body. Arteries are responsible for bringing oxygenated blood from the heart/lungs, whereas veins bring oxygen deficient blood back to the heart/lungs.

The aorta is totally elastic organ. It dilates during the systole along with the arterial system. It stores the potential energy at this stage. During diastole the aorta contracts along with the arterial system to maintain blood pressure. The potential energy is converted to kinetic energy at this stage. This gives you the diastolic blood pressure. Beat by beat, this phenomena continues.
