Old age does not in and of itself affect the brain. Many diseases common to old people can affect old people. One is Alzheimer's. With that new memories frequently do not form. Other neurological problems can cause mental problems. Old bodies simply do not get around like younger bodies or stay awake as long. Old people do not see as many movies or do any where near as many things. The difficulty getting around makes older people insular. As a result, a number of older people become far less aware of what is going on in the world. Thus, frequently an old body imprisons a sharp mind.
One cause of loss of memory could be brain injury or trauma, which can affect the brain's ability to form or retrieve memories.
