You start laying shingle by placing the first row upside down with the tabs pointing toward the ridge at the bottom edge on the roof with an overhang of about an inch. The next row places directing on top of them with the tabs pointing down with the edges staggered so you don't have edges on top of each other. The next row places on top of the second layer with the upper edge about 6 inches higher than the upper egde of the second layer. You can used a roofing hatchet for a gauge to place the shingles the correct distance. I also check my rows with a tape measure, measuring from the ridge and making mark every four feet and popping a chalk string to make sure everything stays straight.
