It comes down to a simple urine test. The chemical bufotenin makes up most of the autistic individual and is easy to detect. If it is not found within the urine, then the person must have some other obscure disorder.

A qualified individual or team of individuals can determine whether or not an individual has Autism. Because Autism cannot be diagnosed with a medical test (like a blood test, brain scan, etc.) the diagnosis involves interviews, observations and evaluations which can include:

  • Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, published by the American Psychiatric Association
  • The Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales
  • The Scales of Independent Behavior
  • Childhood Autism Rating Scale

If Autism is suspected by a parent or a teacher, there are some checklists that can be run and reviewed with your family physician or paediatrician. These include:

• Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers

• Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales Development Profile

Autism is a neurological difference, the only test is assessment to determine from behaviour and characteristics if a person is Autistic. There is no urine test as a previous answer joked, there is no specific physical test to determine Autism - although there is work being carried out to determine genes associated with Autism, or brain scans can show possible Autism. You'd see an expert who has trained to spot Autism characteristics in order to determine if you're Autistic or not.

Does an 8-month-old child have autism if he does not babble?

This characteristic is not enough to diagnose autism. Children with autism might babble at 8 months. Children with hearing problems might not babble at 8 months. The child might have autism if he or she has additional signs of autism and other possibilities are eliminated.

What does it mean to dream about someone with autism?

A person with autism has difficulty communicating. So a dream about someone with autism most likely would be about problems communicating. The subconscious mind could be telling the dreamer that he/she is not paying attention or is being too detached from the people and things all around.

Is there any online assessments questionaires to help diagnose a female adult for high functioning autism?

No - autism cannot be diagnosed using on-line quizzes. Autism is a neurological condition, in order to diagnose autism a person would have to go through intensive assessment with an autism expert or team of experts - during assessments other conditions such as social anxiety have to be ruled out, they interview both the individual and their family to identify any developmental issues and characteristics of autism. Assessment can take from one day up to several months. FYI - Terms such as "high functioning" are meaningless and considered offensive within the autism community, these terms only serve to undermine the importance of individuals who are more severely effected by autism and further myths about autism.

Is there any genetic test to see if you have autism?

No - autism is a neurological condition so it cannot show in a blood test, the only way to diagnose autism is with intensive assessment with a trained professional.
