HERE IS BLOOD FLOW STEP-BY- STEP THROUGH THE HUMAN HEART:

Oxygen poor blood is collected from the Inferior and Superior Vena Cava. It is released into the Right Atrium where it moves through the Tricuspid Valve into the Right Ventricle. When the Right Ventricle contracts, blood is forced through the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary artery which splits into the Left and Right Pulmonary Veins. Blood is taken via the arteries to the lungs where the oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuse through the simple squamous tissue. Oxygen- Rich blood then returns to the heart via the Pulmonary Trunk which empty into the left atrium. Once the atrium contracts, the blood passes through the Bicuspid Valve into the Left Ventricle. Once the ventricle contracts blood is forced through the Aortic Valve and out of the Aorta to travel to the blood tissue.

If you are looking at this, you are probably taking Biomed..... MY HEART GOES OUT TO YOU! IF I KNEW WHAT BIOMED WOULD BE LIKE< I WOULD HAVE NEVER TAKEN IT! <3

The heart squeezes the blood out (valves keep it from going backwards) into the large arteries. The arteries are elastic (like long, skinny balloons). How much flows out at the other ends depends on how many capillaries are open at any given time. They open and close depending on the (partial) pressure of oxygen locally. the blood flows from there back to the heart via veins.

The pulmonary side is about the same, but all the capillaries are always open and so the working pressure is much lower.

Note that the systemic side controls flow.

Right atrium > tricuspid valve > right ventricle > pulmonary semi lunar valve > pulmonary artery > lungs >pulmonary vein > left atrium > bicuspid (mitral) valve > left ventricle > Aortic semi lunar valve> Aorta> arteries> arterioles> capillaries> venules> veins> Vena cava> Right atrium out to the rest of the body.

Do heart valves control the direction of blood flow?

Yes, heart valves control the direction of blood flow by opening and closing to ensure that blood flows in one direction through the heart. This helps to maintain the efficiency of the heart's pumping action and prevent backflow of blood.
