He never sleeps. Gaara has chronic insomnia because he is afraid of Shukaku completely possesing him.

Gaara has black rings around his eyes because he has chronic insomnia. Gaara wont sleep because he is afraid of Shukaku (demon possessing Gaara) to completely take over him when hes asleep.
Does Gaara live?
No. His jutsu keeps him awake in order to keep his biju under control. If he falls asleep the demon comes out. He has some kind of insomniac jutsu that help him keep awake, also theorized that it is partially the cause of his behavior. EDIT: Actually, it is suggested in the anime that he does sleep though does so rarily because any sustained amount of sleep will cause Shukaku to slowly eat his soul and take over control.

It is unknown. Sabaku no Gaara is his only name we know of. His surname isn't revealed. I don't think Gaara has another name besides Sabaku No Gaara but that's just my opinion. Yes, Gaara has no last name. Neither does Kankuro or Temari, seeing as they are brothers and sister. I do not believe TenTen has a last name either. Gaara only goes by Sabaku no Gaara, meaning Gaara of the Desert or Gaara of the Sand. Many people (now) call him Gaara-sama when he is Kazekage.
