Niacin, also known as nicotinic acid, is vitamin B3. It occurs naturally in plants and animals and is also added to many foods as a vitamin supplement. Niacin also blocks the production of cholesterol in the body.
Niacin is used to reduce levels of LDL (or "bad") cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides and to raise levels of "good" (HDL)cholesterol. These actions are important in the prevention of Heart disease and hardening of the arteries, which can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.
Niacin works by blocking the release of triglycerides from storage (body fat) and also by inhibiting the liver from making more from blood sugar by blocking hepatocyte diacylglycerol acyltransferase.
Update: more details on how niacin raises HDL have been reported by
Lin-Hua Zhang, Vaijinath S. Kamanna, Michael C. Zhang, and Moti L. Kashyap. Niacin inhibits surface expression of ATP synthase %u03B2 chain in HepG2 cells: implications for raising HDL. J. Lipid Res, 49: 1195-1201 (June 2008)
From the press release:
"The researchers focused on a certain component in ATP synthase, the protein that makes the body's energy source ATP. A subunit of the protein known as the 'beta chain' can take up HDL, and therefore reduce the body's levels of 'good' cholesterol.
Using human cells, Moti Kashyap and colleagues found that this beta chain is the basis of niacin's effect. When human liver HepG2 cells were incubated with niacin a 27 per cent reduction in the presence of beta chains on the cell surface was observed.
Moreover, a 35 per cent reduction in the uptake of HDL was recorded."
go on a diet
slo niacin and cholesterol can be helpful
Fruits, vegetables, and fish are foods that will help you lower your cholestrol because they don't have any in them.
it is a test for presence of cholestrol and if two layers form, upper layer becomes red and lower one becomes yellow, it indicates the presence of cholestrol.
Niacin, also known as vitamin B3, plays a crucial role in converting food into energy. It is important for maintaining healthy skin, nerves, and digestive system. Niacin also helps in regulating cholesterol levels in the body.
It hasn't been proven yet that vitamins, as a supplement, help to lower cholesterol. A healthy balanced diet is the only way to get all the vitamins that may lower cholesterol.
when having a headache is that a sign that the cholestrol is high
One of the best ways to lower cholesterol is eating whole grains. Beans, fish, fresh fruit and vegetables that are high in fiber are all beneficial and can help to lower a persons cholesterol.
Niacin does not clear drugs out of your body. It just makes you feel flushed and helps lower your cholesterol some.
Yes , But not too much. Every oil contains Cholestrol.
There are several foods that you can eat that will lower your cholesterol. You can try changing your diet to whole grains like oatmeal, and cheerios, also fruit, and fish.
Niacinamide is the amide of vitamin B3. Other names for niacinamide include nicotinic acid amide and nicotinamide. This is also known as "flush free" niacin; it has the same vitamin qualities as niacin but does not lower cholesterol like niacin does, and it may be toxic to the liver at doses over 3g/day.
