One of the benefits of going on an alkaline acid diet is that it lowers the risk of kidney stones. Another possible benefit is that this type of diet can ease lower back pain.
Kidney stones form over years, finally becoming painful once they are at least a millimeter in length (some grow many times that large); the pain becomes worse if the stone lodges in the ureter; in that case, a device called a stent must be inserted to help prop the opening wide enough so that the stone will not block the flow of urine coming down the ureter into the bladder; if it does, hydronephrosis (backing up of fluid in the kidney) results.Kidney stones are caused primarily by chronic mild to moderate dehydration, repeatedly going on for many years, making it difficult for the kidney to use enough water to dilute the waste going out. But there are also other factors, including hereditary predisposition, and diet -- items that are otherwise healthy, like spinach, can contribute to the formation of kidney stones in some people.Since not all people may have the same causes for this, seeing a good urologist (or, in the case of women, possibly a urogynecologist) is the place to start. Hematuria, the medical term for blood in the urine, could indicate a number of problems. The most common cause of blood in the urine is from damage in the urinary tract. Physical damage in the urinary tract is likely from a kidney stone that has not been passed through the ureters. Kidney stones are normally harmless unless they grow to abnormally large sizes, blocking the flow of urine. The problem with kidney stones comes when they are passed through the ureters and into the bladder. A stone can barely fit through the ureters and is therefore very painful to void. Otherwise, a stone won't cause any long term problems... Other possible reasons for blood in the urine are urinary tract infections, kidney infections, tumors in the urinary tract, or kidney disease. Blood in the urine is the first sign that appears in all of these cases. Protein is often present in these diseases, as well. Unlike kidney stones, infection and diseases are more serious and will likely result in death if left untreated. Since urinary tract infection and kidney problems are harder to treat than many other conditions, early detection is vital...

Kidney infections should not cause tightness in the chest and shortness of breath. The kidneys are more likely to effect your back. Definitely check with your doctor to make sure nothing more serious is going on.
After my bypass surgery 3 yrs ago I developed kidney stones. My urologist make several lab tests and found that most of the stones were oxalate, which was caused because the urine had a high pH over 6.5 and lower citric acid in my body, for which I was prescribed with Urocit-K (Potassium Citrate) to maintain a lower pH ideally under 6, to prevent stones to form. Last night I passed 2 stones one was a size of a small raisin, in previous days my urine turned cloudy, with red color and sometimes a lower pain before going to pee. I passed more than 15 kidney stones during a year period. The doctor recommend me to drink lots of water and prevent dehydration daily, take my medication, drink lemon juice and lemon iced tea (Crystal-Light) that contains citric acid. Hope this helps!
