The 2010 U.S. Census counted 74,262 persons in the city of Kalamazoo, a decrease of 3.74% from 77,145 in 2000. The decrease is blamed in part on a 12.6% enrollment drop at Western Michigan University and the growth of off-campus college student housing in adjacent Oshtemo Township, which has lead to fewer students living in the city. This housing includes The Pointe at Western (originally Jefferson Commons), Copper Beech Townhomes, and The Centre (originally Sterling University Centre). Kalamazoo is now ranked as the 13th largest city in the state, based on population. The Hispanic population grew 43.3% to 4,736. The population that self-identified as black grew 3.4% to 16,460.
