Some of the more intangible problems with overpopulation are more "felt" than seen. When houses are so close together you can touch your neighbors walls and see into their bathroom it is time to find more space. One of the driving factors behind the National Socialist Movement in Germany's 1920's and 1930's were attributed to loss of land and space for people after WWI. People need space, and humankind has always sought new frontiers to provide this space and that is why humans are always expanding their space for living. Space and getting off Earth has always been "too far" and not possible until the NASA landing on the Moon brought the realization that even space is not a limiting barrier to human population.
Psychological changes in humans brought on by overpopulation can cause other problems and research into these issues is ongoing.
