There are three components to the British postcode. They have different formats, depending on how big an area they are covering. They have the following example formats:
W1A 1AA
TS18 4DQ
B1 2JP
The first component is a one- or two-letter prefix for the city (or part of London). The second component may be one or two digits, or a digit and a letter, identifying a section of the city or an outlying town. There is then a blank space, followed by the last component, which is always one digit and two letters, identifying a single business or a small range of residential addresses.
