drill the holes at angles of 45-60 degrees into the stone---the object is to make an equilateral triangle between the pins and the lifting point too. seems to work well with no slippage but check with the manufacturer because changes may alter the weight ratings.

Is it possible to have a triangle with side lengths 3.5cm 4.5cm and 7cm?

yes Cut a string 15 cm ; pin one end ; swing around the loose end and pin it at 4.5 cm ; pin again 3.5 cm beyond that ; now make an angle with the 7cm loose end dangling; pull the loose end toward the first pin and adjust the angles till they touch. That's how I tie my shoes.

What you want to do is grab a small sheet of foil which will cover the stem. When the stem is covered, use your finger to push the foil in and make a semi circle shape. When this is done you an elastic band and tighten the foil to the stem to keep it in place. Next you will want to use a pin or toothpick and pepper the foil with small little holes. around 4 or 5 will be fine.. make sure the holes are not too big or too small. There you have it, a cone piece worthy of a king!

Who invented the Lewis pin for lifting granite pieces?

I worked with an old stonemason who told me the single pin Lewis (not the three pin) was invented by a collegue, an Englishman (whose name will come back to me in the middle of the night) whilst working in Australia. I guess it would have been in the 1920s. As he was not a national he was not able to patent it in Aus and so got nothing from it. Chris Pellett - Albourne Stone
