A city-state is a sovereign state consisting of a city and its immediate surroundings. They developed as a form of political organization in ancient times due to the benefits of centralized power, economic prosperity, and cultural exchange within a smaller, more manageable territory. They allowed for greater autonomy and self-governance compared to larger empires or kingdoms.
