Tome Pires made this comment in his book Suma Oriental (1512-15), during his voyage to Southeast Asia after the Portuguese conquest of Malacca. In it he inferred that the narrow Straits of Malacca controlled so much of the trade passing from East to West, that anyone who dominates the passage controls the flow of lucrative goods into Europe as well. This was at a time when Venice profited most from the Asia-Europe trade. But the saying rings true today, although for 'Malacca' we would more rightly say 'Singapore', while 'Venice' could be seen to represent the West more generally.
