Most fertilizers will contain some amount of phosphates and nitrates. Both of which are food for algae. The best method is to have the fertilizer applied using a drop spreader (not a rotary spreader). Water the fertilizer into the lawn/garden areas. Prevent walking on the fertilized area for several days. If phosphates get high in the pool/spa then you can use a phosphate remover to lower the quantity in the water.

I spread 10,000 sq-ft of ACE Green Turf over about 12,000 sq-ft of lawn using my Republic rotary broadcast spreader. I used a setting of 4 for the front yard (which was too much) and 2.5 in the back yard (which was too little). So, I'm thinking the right setting was about 3. Not very scientific, hope this helps...

This is a tricky question since there are different kind of scott spreaders and the lesco products doesn't list the settings for all of the scott's spreaders. I use the standard Scott spreader. What I figured out is that the spreader number represents the amount of pounds of product per 1000 sq ft. Example: if you want to apply 4lbs/1000 sq ft of product then use setting 4. If you want to apply 8lbs/1000 sq ft then use setting 8. Always remember not to go over the maximum amt of product per year. This is important when applying lesco pre-emergent and post-emergent since it can affect the PH of the soil. I also found this chart. Fertilizing your lawn will not only green and thicken your yard, but also protect it against common pests like grubs and weeds. The following seven steps will get you from an embarrassing ’winter thaw’ lawn, to a vibrant trophy lawn. step one: Timing! - Fertilizing your lawn is important, but fertilizing at the wrong time can be almost as useless as not fertilizing at all. Wait for your lawn to de-thaw before spreading your fertilizer. This generally takes a few weeks of early-spring weather, and will generally grow enough to require a mow or two. Step two: Choosing! - Now it’s time to select a fertilizer. Look for brands of fertilizer that fit your lawns needs. On the side of the bag should be a list of types of grass the fertilizer is good for (Bluegrass and Zoysia are two of the most common) and check to see how often it should be applied. step three: For the young lawn - A young lawn of two years or less will appreciate a formula designed for it.
