More formally, in "the scientific method," to experiment is to test a hypothesis. A hypothesis is a guess about something, based on some reasoning or another. Careful experimentation involves the use of a control, which is a test who's outcome you expect to be the opposite of the main test. Let's say you hypothesize that things that are less dense that water float in water. You might try an experiment in which you attempt to float a watermelon and a rock, after having determined, through careful measuring, that the watermelon was less dense than water, and that the rock was more dense than water. The result was that the watermelon floated and the rock sank. The floating of the watermelon was the object of the experiment, and the floating of the rock was the control. The conclusion of the experiment was that your hypothesis was confirmed; so the hypothesis then becomes a theory - the theory is that things that are less dense than water float in water. For the moment it's only your theory, but if other people try other tests and come to the same conclusion, to the extent that there forms a general consensus across the scientific community concerning the matter, then it becomes a "scientific theory." That's a basic description of the scientific method.
