The Chinese have a long history of research and inventions. In centuries past, they were one of the world leaders in learning, science and technology.
Joseph Needham spent his adult life studying this fascinating subject. This is well summarized in Simon Winchester's biography of Needham. The Chinese had developed moveable type, the horse stirrup, an early magnetic compass, gunpowder, etc., and single-line listings of the dates and titles of "inventions and discoveries" occupy 11 pages in the Biography. Curiously, Needham occupied room K1 at Cambridge for some sixty-odd years, and this room is currently occupied by Stephen Hawking.
