A transverse wave is a wave in which the direction of displacement is perpendicular to the propagation of the wave. One example is an ocean wave, the wave travels towards the shore but the water moves vertically. Another is a wave of light, the electric and magnetic fields are perpendicular to the direction of the wave.

Waves in water must be carried by water--i.e. water is the medium. Sound waves must be carried by a medium--i.e. air or water. This is why in space, without the medium of air, there is no sound. Electromagnetic waves--light waves--need no medium.
