∙ 13y agoA yes response would not be relevant when asked a question that is not a yes or no. Doing this is either passive aggressive, or is meant as humor --but it is very lame humor. It is inappropriate and childish.
Example 1: Which side won the US Civil War?
Inappropriate Response: Yes.
Example 2: What areas of the world did James Cook explore?
Inappropriate Response: Yes.
About the only place this "humor" would be semi-acceptable--though nonetheless annoying--would be in a close relationship.
Wife to husband: Do you want to eat at home or go out to dinner?
Husband's Response: Yes. (Which would aggravate his wife!)

Yes, a hollow pipe does have a number of volume measures. There are the volume of the whole object - relevant if you want to pack the pipe in something, the hollow interior - relevant to find out how much it can contain, the difference between the two - relevant to work out the amount of material required to make the pipe. Unfortunately, a question mark at the end of an incomplete phrase gives no indication as to which one you mean. Try resubmitting with a complete sentence.

Yes, and I believe if you ask a question and merge it into an appropriate question then it still counts as a question asked.
An open-ended question is a question that prompts a detailed response and cannot be answered with a simple "yes" or "no." It encourages the person being asked to provide thoughts, opinions, or feelings on a topic, leading to a more in-depth conversation.
