the earth is made up of tectonic plates right,

well these plates slide together over millions of years

and sometimes two of the plates get stuck and eventually they will break free

this action causes a massive shockwave that causes an earthquake

Seismic waves travel at variable speeds, up to maybe 8 km per second in the crust or 13 km/s in the mantle.

This corresponds to nearly 18,000 miles per hour in the crust and about 29,000 miles per hour in the mantle.
