The invention of the microscope and the improvements made to microscopes since their invention have opened up "whole new worlds" of organisms that before were not seen by the naked eye. Once it was realized that "microscopic" organisms existed, it was just a matter of scientific investigation that scientists were able to determine the importance of bacteria (and much later viruses) were both beneficial and harmful (disease causing). Without the microscope we would not have understood the major disease causing mechanisms that we know today nor would we have produced antibiotics and antiviral drugs to treat the diseases these organisms caused. This is an ongoing endeavor as the microscopic world is still very much uncharted and misunderstood!
