The largest hailstone on record fell on July 23, 2010 in Vivian Nebraska. It was 18.5 inches in circumference and nearly 2 pounds in weight.

The biggest ones typically fall in the US Great Plains, but even there it's quite rare to see anything more than the size of baseballs.

Although it is not uncommon for tornadoes to be accompanied by large hail there is not particular size of hail that is associate with them. Large hail can occur without tornadoes and tornadoes can occur without hail.

Assuming this refers to the National Weather Service criteria for a severe thunderstorm, it was changed I believe in January 2010 from 0.75" diameter (penny size) to 1" diameter (quarter size).

According to one of the CoCoRaHS observers, they got a hailstone with a diameter of 6". I think that's a record size! However, the most common largest size is a little over 4" in diameter. In a Severe Storm, the most common average size 1"-2" in diameter.

The largest hail ever recorded was 7 inches in diameter and weighed 1.67 pounds. Typically though, anything larger than a Golf ball is considered big. Typical hail is pea to marble sized.
