Energy can not be destroyed, so the total amount of energy before a change is equal to the amount of energy after the change. However, some energy is changed into a useful form, but some may be wasted and not used. For example, a light bulb, changes electrical energy into light energy, but some of the energy is changed to heat and some to sound, these are not useful and are wasted, but are changed nonetheless.

So a transformation from mechanical energy to heat will have the same total energy at the start as at the finish, but unless it is 100% efficient some of the original energy will be 'lost'
