Since the question is the science category then scientifically doomsday is a real event that will take place....

The Sun is about 4.5 billion years old. it has used up about half of its nuclear fuel (hydrogen). In about 5 billion years from now, the sun will begin to die. As the Sun grows older it will begin to burn more helium as its hydrogen fuel supply begins to run out and burning more helium means the sun will begin to burn hotter (eventually burning away the earths atmosphere) the suns core will begin to contract and the outer layers will expand, then cool, and become less bright. It will eventually become a red giant star...when the sun completes the process of becoming a Red Giant it will have expanded far enough to engulf Mercury, venus, earth and possibly mars...

So doomsday (the entire destruction of the earth) is real and will happen in this mannor (IF) one of the numerous other possible doomsday events do not hit the earth in the next 5 billion years..such as volcanos, giant solar flares, asteroid strikes, lethal atmospheric changes, overdose of cosmic radiation, polar shifts, cooling of the earths core, massive core rupture reducing the planet to rubble, giant comet hitting the earth,a rogue planet drifting into the solar system and causing massive gravitational changes, all possibilities, but the sun burning out is an absolute that you can count on....
