His earliest cartoon art and animation was made while Walt was living in Kansas City, but the animation did not become a commercial success until he moved to Hollywood.

Walt Disney dropped out of high school and served briefly as a Red Cross ambulance driver in France during World War I (1918). His brother Roy helped him get a job drawing at the Pesman-Rubin Art Studio in Kansas City, where he met longtime collaborator Ub Iwerks. They were unable to succeed with their own art company, but began producing their own animation while working for the Kansas City Film Ad Company in 1920. Their cartoon Laugh-O-Gramswere sponsored by local theater owner Frank Newman, and became popular, but when they formed their own studio, business problems again caused its demise.

In 1923, Walt relocated to Hollywood (living with his uncle Robert) where the earliest actual Disney animated works, the Alice Comedies, were produced from 1924 to 1927.
