Beorn had a handful of his own animals at his command and were trained, he could turn in to an animal himself and let Bilbo and his companions stay at his home outside the borders of Mirkwood. He went outside at night to keep watch whilst the companions slept. He cares for his animals more than anything, he lets the companions borrow horses but followed them in the shadows when they were on their way to Mirkwood, where the companions would let the horses go back to Beorn's home and Beorn followed his animals back.
Beorn has to leave so he tells all the dwarfs to stay in the hallway.
Beorn is a man who lives in the wilderness. Gandalf knows him and also knows he doesn't like a lot of company, so he introduces the dwarves a few at a time so Beorn won't get mad and turn them all away. He is special because he is a skin changer that can turn into a bear.

Beorn is a skin-changer who can take the form of a man during the day and a bear at night. During the day, he appears as a normal man who is hospitable and kind to visitors. But at night, he transforms into a fearsome bear, protecting his territory with ferocity.
Gandalf tells Beorn the story of the journey from the start to the point that takes them to Beorn's house. Beorn is intrigued and entertained and so, as the group are no threat to him, he allows them to to stay in his house for the night. While they sleep, Beorn travels to discover if the tale he has been told is true. It is and as they have killed the Great Goblin (Beorn hates goblins) he agrees to give the group supplies and ponies to take them to Mirkwood.

They don't want to go in all at once, so Beorn will think they were trying to kill him The dwarves must enter Beorn's house in pairs so that, as Gandalf tells their tale to Beorn, each entrance does not seem very imposing and Beorn's interest in the story is built up. Then the group will be able to stay with Beorn.
