  1. As a young hobbit Gollum then called Smeagol lived with his family in the house of his grandmother in a community of hobbits living on the shores of the Anduin river near the Gladden Fields (where Isildur was ambushed by orcs and slain 2463 years before at the beginning of the Third Age).
  2. On a day when Smeagol and his relative Deagol were fishing, Deagol was pulled into the river by a large fish and accidentally found the One Ring on the bottom. When Deagol came out of the river with the ring Smeagol murdered him to get the One Ring for himself. He used the One Ring frequently to learn secrets. He began making odd unpleasant noises in his throat and so was nicknamed Gollum for the sound of those noises. He soon became unwelcome and was cast out of his grandmother's house and the community of hobbits.
  3. Gollum wandered toward the Misty Mountains and found caves there. He went deep in the caves and lived on a small island in the centre of an underground lake for about 480 years until shortly after he lost the One Ring and Bilbo Baggins found it.
  4. Gollum then left the caves to pursue Bilbo and recover the One Ring, but he eventually wandered into Mordor and was captured and held in Barad Dur as a prisoner where he was interrogated by Sauron.
  5. Eventually Sauron released Gollum and after more wandering he was captured and held in the prison of King Thranduil of the Woodelves in Mirkwood, where he was treated as gently as possible.
  6. Shortly after the Nazgul began their search for Baggins, King Thranduil's lands were attacked and Gollum escaped to resume his attempt to recover the One Ring.
  7. Gollum began following the Company and when it broke up above the falls of Anduin, he of course followed Frodo and Sam (the group with the One Ring). From here on they traveled to the Cracks of Doom, where the One Ring was destroyed and Gollum died holding it.

Why does gollum not appear in the desalation of smaug?

Gollum did not appear in the Desolation of Smaug becuase Gollum was more Lord of the Rings than the Hobbit and the reason he was in the Unexpected Journey was becuase thats when Bilbo fell into his cave and found the ring and had riddles with him as Gollum only appears in the riddles in the dark part of the Hobbit and Gollum also did not leave his cave untill the Hunt For Gollum and another thing the Hobbit trilogy has Smaug as the antagonist just like the Lord of the Rings trilogy has Gollum as the antagonist
