You see, Zuko challenged Azula to agnikye, and then he was almost winning, and then he provokes her to shoot lightening at him so he can redirect it, and just when you think she's going to shoot it at him, she shoots it at Katara. And Zuko, being the fabulous guy he is, jumps in front of Katara and gets hit by lightening, where he would have died, but after a quick battle of Katara vs. Azula, Katara chained her up (long story) and rushed over and saved Zuko with magic spirit water. So beautiful! -tears-

He doesnt really have her captive. They are just thrown into prision together. Of course later Katara says that he was talking about his mother and making it seem like he actually had feelings. In a way Zuko quickly gained Katara's trust, then he turned on her and Aang.
