Sherlock Holmes usually wore a collared shirt, a hat that looked some what like a top hat. Deerstalker hat, small top hat, or bowler hat, a hand woven tie, frock coat, trousers, Wellington dress shoes or boots, and, being the gentleman that he was, often seen with a cane or walking stick. The usual standard attire of the Victorian Londoner. Evening wear, top hats, dressing gowns, etc. etc.
Sherlock Holmes is most famous for his Inverness (the cape-like coat he wore) and his deerstalker (the hat). The Deerstalker cap and Inverness cape are travelling clothes, and, as such, were only depicted by Sidney Paget when Holmes was travelling. They have since been given disproportional importance by later actors.
Please see a limited selection of Sidney Paget drawings linked below.
In disguise, of course, his appearance was far more varied.
Well, the common conscience is that he wore a deerstalker. But that is never mentioned in the canon. The myth came about because of Sidney Paget (the original Sherlock Holmes illustrator) liked to wear deerstalker caps and he thought he'd give it to Holmes in his drawings. Most likely Holmes wore a top hat, something like top hat, with a smaller top and wider brim, whenever he was out, though I will forever think of him in a deerstalker when he travels.
As an avid reader of the series myself and a great obsessor of the Victorian era, I would believe Sherlock Holmes to be dressed in a shirt, plain, wrinkled, with a dark waistcoat (vest) and matching jacket. His black pants would be held up by suspenders while his shoes would be polished to perfection. I assume his hair would be set to the requrement of dress (fancy or everyday). I hope this is helpful to you!

The hat most commonly associated with Sherlock Holmes in films is a deerstalker, a type of hat that is worn for hunting, but this is wrong. In the books, he always wears a normal hat, most often a fedora or a bowler hat.

Slight correction Holmes is depicted in a deerstalker cap in 'The Boscombe Valley Mystery' and 'Silver Blaze' by Sidney Paget for in both of these stories he and Watson had to travel a distance. This makes sense because the deerstalker was a travelling cap. Check the links below.
Depends on which story you're talking about, but Holmes typically dressed "humbly", as Watson puts it, and when he's not in public he wears a "mouse-colored dressing robe". He is described as hawk-like in his features, and he has a long profile, a wide forehead, and beady black eyes. His figure is lean, but we're told he's stronger than he looks. Hope this was of use to you.
"It's easy to tell that you've been accustomed to wear a uniform, Watson; you'll never pass as a pure-bred civilian as long as you keep that habit of carrying your handkerchief in your sleeve." -- Sherlock Holmes, 'The Crooked Man' "You are in the habit of doing up your boots in a certain way. I see them on this occasion fastened with an elaborate double bow, which is not your usual method of tying them." -- Sherlock Holmes, 'The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax' "Your fatal habit of looking at everything from the point of view of a story instead of as a scientific exercise has ruined what might have been an instructive and even classical series of demonstrations. You slur over work of the utmost finesse and delicacy in order to dwell upon sensational details which may excite but cannot possibly instruct the reader." -- Sherlock Holmes, 'The Adventure of Abbey Grange' "You are like my friend Dr. Watson, who has a bad habit of telling his stories wrong end foremost." -- Sherlock Holmes, 'The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge' "I am getting into your involved habit, Watson, of telling a story backwards." -- Sherlock Holmes, 'The Problem of Thor Bridge'
Holmes only wore the deerstalker hat on a few occasions in locations that would actually warrant a reason for wearing such attire. While in London, however, he normally wore hats that were more appropriate to the setting (likely top hats), just like any other gentleman would.
Well, maybe.
Conan Doyles' hero detective wears a deerstalker. While Holmes wore a Deerstalker in one story, he was equally inclined to top hats and, in disguise, even sailor's caps.*Additional Note: Holmes' so-called "classic look" of the deerstalker cap and Inverness capecoat were strictly for traveling and country wear. The famous deerstalker is even referred to as a "cloth traveling cap." While in London, where Holmes spent most of his time, he carried himself as a gentleman, and could usually be found in a top hat and coat while about town.

They wore black armbands. It was a common symbol of mourning in Victorian times.
Even though Holmes didn't wear one in the stories, the illustrator showed the model wearing a Deerstalker hat.

Is quite incorrect. He was never described as wearing a deerstalker cap, just a cloth cap. The curvey calabash pipe is never described either; but was adapted by Holmes portrayer William Gillette, who wanted the pipe so that it would not marr his profile. Holmes would never wear his cap unless in the country or in disguise, otherwise he prefered a top-hat.
