The life of Martha was very complicated. Nothing in her background prepared her for eight long years of war. She lived in army camps, helped muster the troops. She was 43 when the war began and had lived through many things. At 20 years old she married Daniel Parke Custis and had four children. Two died and her husband died leaving her with 2 young children. She soon met Washington and married him. Then, came the problems in the colonies. After Lexington and Concord Washington was made the commander of the army. Virginia's royal governor threatened to take Martha hostage. He was stopped by the militia, but this is put a scare into the family and Martha joined him at camp. Later, at Mt. Vernon she employed her slaves to knitting and sewing to provide clothing for the troops. After the war and the election of Washington as president Martha was required to set the tone of the role of the First Lady. She organized everything at Mt. Vernon and saw her husband become President. The very next day she received official visitors and a schedule was set up for receptions. Tuesday would b the day for the president to greet gentleman guests; Fridays were for Martha to entertain anyone who wanted to come providing they were properly dressed. Protocol demanded that women pay calls on each other and receive calls from visitors. They had regular receptions. This included the First Lady. There was also formal dinners where she was hostess. This was her life and to answer your question there is no historical reports of what "she loved to do." It must be assumed that what she did is what she wanted to do and what was required by her station in life. Unlike the people of today the people of the 1700's followed the rules of society and station. This was expected of them and this is what they did.
