Kung Fu schools did not start using the whole "sash" system until around the 1980's, prior to that, you either completed the requirements or you didn't. Bruce Lee completed his training with master Yip Man; although Lee acquired the skill of Man's 1 year students in only 2 months (an incredible feat), Lee nevertheless stuck with it to the very end. Bruce Lee learned and perfected 1 year's worth of Martial Arts, in only 2 months, Chinese people credit this incredible learning speed with the fact that he was a "dragon." Bruce Lee was born in the Year of the Dragon, during the Hour of the Dragon, because he was a "double dragon," it was sort of expected he would excel at anything, no matter what he did.
Some of Bruce Lee's original students (who are still alive) are Dan Inosanto, Ted Wong, Jerry Poteet, Chuck Norris, Richard Bustillo, Jesse Glover, Steve Golden, Patrick Strong, and Leo Fong. These are all 1st generation students of Bruce Lee, but they are many instructors under them who are 2nd generation.
As you know Bruce lee knows many different types of martial arts. It is not proven that someone just basically taught Bruce Lee. There is a man named Ip Man who taught Bruce Lee parts of wing chun
Bruce Lee only authorised 3 people to teach his arts. Taky Kimura (Jun Fan Gung Fu), James Yimm Lee (Jeet Kune Do), and Dan Inosanto (Jeet Kune Do). The difference between these arts can be found on various sites.
Bruce Lee was taught the escrima or kali sticks by his friend Dan Inosanto, along with the nunchaku as well, late sixties. Bruce used a pair of wooden kali sticks covered in a thin rubber-like material in the underground fight scenes of Enter the Dragon 1973. One of the wooden sticks is broken inside its covering near one end, as can been seen on film. These actual used sticks are with a top UK collector. As with most props a second set was made for backup, likely with a Japanese collector.
He didn't formally study Karate. Bruce Lee studied Wing Chun a close in form of Kung Fu. He learned many skills from martial artists of all styles and incorporated them into his art.
