Bellows are also sometimes referred to as "boots". It is a rubber covering over a CV joint that keeps dirt out of the joint. A CV joint is on all front wheel drive axles and some (independent rear suspension) rear axles. If the bellows develops a crack, dirt can get in to the grease within the joint and cause wear.
