pg 56 paragraph 3
In the 74th annual Hunger Games, Katniss doesn't really seem to do anything to receive the gifts that Haymitch sends her. Haymitch watched The Hunger Games and observed what Katniss was doing and what exactly she needed and when she needed it. For instance, to gain the audience's attention and devotion for the "star crossed lovers of District 12", Haymitch sent Katniss broth to give to Peeta when he was in pain while he was in the cave to make the audience feel compassion for the couple.

Katniss and Peeta confronted Haymitch because he wasn't mentoring them. He was just sitting and drinking. They confronted him telling him that he needed to mentor him, and that they were fighters. This tells you that Haymitch didn't really mentor his tributes, as District 12 wasn't trained before The Hunger Games. They were too poor. But when Katniss and Peeta showed him that they were fighters and weren't willing to give up, he was willing to train them half sober.
Among their similarities, they are both extremely jaded with respect to the spirit of the Games, and to the system that endorses it. They have both won the Games primarily by cleverness and luck, rather than combat ability. Where the differ is that Haymitch is pragmatic to a fault, whereas Katniss maintains an idealistic approach to her challenges. Haymitch has been "broken" by his association with the Games, and thus willingly participates in the Capitol's schemes as a practical matter, while Katniss tries to maintain her rebellious attitude. Yet, at the end of the third book, Katniss begins to approach the practical apathy of Haymitch.
