In September 1955, Dean replaced his white Porsche 356 Super Speedster with a new, silver Porsche 550 Spyder. Dean had the car specialized by having the number "130" painted on both the front and back. Also painted on the back of the car was "Little Bastard," Dean's nickname given to him by Bill Hickman (Dean's dialogue coach for Giant). On September 30, 1955, James Dean was driving his new Porsche 550 Spyder to an auto rally in Salinas, California when the fatal accident occurred. Originally planning to tow the Porsche to the rally, Dean changed his mind at the last minute and decided to drive the Porsche instead.
On Spetember 30, 1955, Dean and his mechanic had prepared his Porsche Spyder for a sports car race. He had originally decided to transport the car by trailer, but at the last minute chose to drive it there as he wanted more time to familiarise himself with it. He was ticketed at about 3:30 in the afternoon for speeding (65 in a 55mph zone). They later stopped for fuel and met up with another driver, Lance Reventlow, at a place called Blackwells Corner. They continued driving and were on US Route 466/State Route 46, travelling west near Cholame CA. Another car driven by student Donald Turnupseed was coming in the opposite direction and attempted to turn from that road to State Route 41. He crossed into the Spyder's lane and the two crashed almost head-on. It was concluded that the wreck of the car and Dean's position indicated that he had been travelling at the speed limit (although many reported he had been speeding).
He died in a car crash in 1955, (was speeding &lost control of car)
james dean died in a car accident in 1955, him and his mechanic were going to california. james died of a broken neck, his mechanic got injured too.
James Byron Dean was 24 when he passed away. He was born on 2/8/31 and died on 9/30/55.
Donald Turnupseed was driving the opposite direction as James. Because it was twilight and the color of James's car blended in with the sky Donald couldn't see him. Donald turned left where the highways Y'd and Jimmy T-boned him head on. Contrary to many early reports Jimmy was going no faster than 55-60 mph.
