It is a well engineered piece of fantasy which, if you are reasonably normal and have a human's normal reactions willstimulate an adrenal response. It is not as much fear as an anticipated or expected event which was triggered at a moment when you least expected it. A real rockfall, a real avalanche or a real climbing accident can never be anticipated but the fantasy world is entered knowing that 'X' will happen and is therefore anticipated. Experience will change the mind's reaction. Give it another 50 rides and it will become boring. And Then: A programmed change or event will bring on the rush again. It is probably not fear in the classic sense because it is something you both anticipated, expected and hoped for or you would never have taken the ride.
It's hard to answer this because I don't know how low your threshold for "scary" is. Bumper cars? Bounce houses? Ball pits?
Big Thunder Mountain is a roller coaster. It's not an exceptionally fast or violent roller coaster, but it is a roller coaster; there are some sudden drops and turns and the "train" goes go through dark sections in some parts of the ride. There's also one scene that simulates an explosion, though honestly, if your child is young enough to find it convincing they'll likely be too young to understand the buildup to the explosion and instead just register there was a sudden loud noise.
Young children could potentially be scared by the ride; my daughter, who was in kindergarten and just barely tall enough to meet the height requirement the first time she rode it, didn't seem to think it was scary. She was more nervous waiting in line for the ride than on the ride itself.
Yes, They are adding more Matterhorn Yetis to the ride as well as painting and taking care of the cars and the rest of the ride
If any ride at Disneyland is closed, it is either because the ride broke down or it's under yearly maintenance
There's a few of them, but the most famous one would have to be Snow White's Scary Adventures

Contrary to popular opinion, it is neither 'Splash Mountain', nor 'It's A Small World'. It's actually 'Ellen's Energy Adventure' in Epcot, lasting approximately 45 minutes.

The only reason a ride wouldn't be open is due to either technical difficulties or remodeling

The Matterhorn Bobsleds, which opened four years after the park itself did, were the first "roller coaster" type ride at Disneyland.
