Edward Elric's arm was taken away when him and Alphonse Elric, his younger brother, tried to bring their dead mother, Trisha Elric, back to life. In accordance to the Law of Equivalent Exchange Alphonse lost his body and Edward lost his leg. So Edward lost his arm to attach Alphonse's soul to a suit of arm using a blood seal.
It is sort of a joke because his right arm and left leg are metal (automail) prosthetics.
Trisha Elric, though in the first Anime, Full metal alchemist she was failingly transmuted and became Sloth, the humonculi who can turn to water, in the next anime which is supposed to be following the manga, Trisha is human.
Yes, Edward Elric does survive until the very end of the episode of the first Fullmetal Alchemist series. Unfortunately, Edward did not regain his arm and leg, because instead of regaining his body (even though he could pull Al's body out of the gate) he was transferred from Amestris to Earth. This happened as a result of the equivalent exchange law in alchemy. In order to regain Al's body, Edward was transferred to Earth while Al forgot all his memory/experience while his soul was in the suit of armor.
The result was Al (Alphonse Elric), Ed's (Edward Elric) little brother lost his entire body. While Ed himself lost one of his leg. In an attempt to save his little brother Al, Ed tried to bond Al's soul on a piece of armor. Ed had to lose his arm because of that. Al was left with no body, his soul was attached to the piece of armour, and Ed was fitted with an automail arm and leg by Winry and Pinako Rockbell.

Because when Edward lost his arm and leg, Al lost his whole body.
The only anime charecter I know that has one leg is Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist. He loses it when he trys to do human transmutation and his brother Alphonse loses his entire body. but Edward gives his arm to bring Alphonses soul back, then he seals Als soul into a body of armor. But he gets metal limbs in place of his arm and leg. they function perfectly.

because he didnt go in. Alphonse did. Edward just tried to bring back al and he said "No please not al TAKE MY ARM, TAKE MY LEG BUT PLEASE BRING BACK MY BROTHER!" He puts als soul in a suit of armor and he looses his arm and leg. if you saw the anime it's atually a really sad moment.
Fullmetal is the name given to Edward Elric when he becomes a State Alchemist. Every State Alchemist has a name given to them, and the name describes the Alchemist or the type of Alchemy they use. For Example: Edward Elric is given the title Fullmetal Alchemist because of his metal arm and leg. Roy Mustang is given the title Flame Alchemist because he uses fire.
No! He certainly did not turn himself into a homunculi. In the last episode he got transferred to the 'real world' as a result to bring Alphonse's body back from 'the gate'. Unfortunately, he still had his automail arm and leg but he did succeed in bringing Al's body back (even though Al lost his memory about his life in the armour and his body looked exactly the same as the day they tried to bring their mother back)
The Fullmetal Alchemist. This was the title given to Edward Elric, a fictonal character from the anime/cartoon Fullmetal Alchemist (hence the name). He was given this title when he became a "Dog of the Millitary" because he has a Right Arm and a Left Leg made from Automail (A type of steel that can substitute body parts. The nerves are attached to it).
