You can't really play as metal sonic in the game,but in the 2-player mode,hold down triangle+x for the ps2 when you select a stage,and the whole team will have metal skin.
In each stage, there is a golden key. Finding a golden key and having it at the end of the level at the end of each stage will send you to the special stage. Defeating each special stage will give you a Chaos Emerald. Once you have all 7 Chaos Emeralds and have finished all four teams, you can go and fight Metal Sonic!
