You can get an avatar on Neopets by playing games, going to certain places, and collecting items. For example, you can obtain the highly coveted codestone avatar by collecting all 10 regular codestones (not to mention the 6 red codestones)

Go to the top control panel, (the one with "my account", "pet central", "explore", etc.), and mouse over "boards". Then click on the option given after mousing over, "preferences". As soon as you get to that page, there should be an area near the top of the page that says "avatars". Now just go through the scroll down menu, and it will list all the avatars and can show you it as well. Here's a site that list ALL the avatars possible to get on neopets if you're a collector.
