Edgar Allen Poe is not a Science Fiction writer, but he did toy with the possibilities of outer- or other dimensional contact in an unpublished novel called the adventure or narrative of A Gordon Pym. It starts out as an exploration narrative, the ship is caught in some sort of Maelstrom ( see also descent into the malestrom- which oddly enough literally means sick or bad storm, talk of understatement!) and so on. Had Poe lived longer, he might have forged ahead into Science-Fiction with a supernatural kick a forerunner of The Twilight Zone, alas, he died young.
