Moreover, the appearance of a detached, intelligent and lofty character of integrity and English reserve on the literature scene pleased the public. That was why Sherlock Holmes was popular in the Victorian times and continues to be so since then.
They went nuts, people thought that he was real and addressed the older brother of Sidney Paget, (the original illustrator for the stories) as Sherlock Holmes many time because Sidney based his drawings off of him. They wore black bands on their arms when he 'died' and sent death threats to Conon Doyle because he 'killed' him. They made stage plays like crazy. They sent loads of fan mail. So I'd say, they responded rather well, perhaps aside from the never carried out death threat. ;)
