Ahh yes.. That was a really good book. I believe Philip Pullman wrote it.
It, like the book preceding and following it, is a form of realistic fantasy. That is to say, the protagonists are human (or close enough to it) and the majority of their surroundings are decently tangible. It is not, however, realistic. There is inter-world-travel, a magic knife, and visible angels...and possessed computers. All in all, it's the Twilight or Harry Potter sort of fantasy, as opposed to the Lord of the Rings sort.

The ending of The Golden Compass was left unfinished, which makes The Subtle Knife being made into a film even more unlikely.

Prior to the release of the The Golden Compass on December 7, 2007, New Line said that an adaptation of The Subtle Knife would go into production only if the first film was a success. The Golden Compass did well world wide, however it flopped in the US making the making of the film The Subtle Knife unclear. There will not be a Subtle Knife film, there would be no reason to making a sequel to a bad film.
