Severus Snape and Lily Evans lived in the same neighbourhood growing up and became friends before starting Hogwarts.
At Hogwarts they were sorted into different (rivaling) houses, but kept up their friendship for several years. However they grew apart more and more over the years. In their fifth year Lily tried to step in and defend Severus on one of many occasions when he was being bullied and publicly humiliated by a few of Lilys housemates (among them her future husband; James Potter).
Severus however was angry and humiliated and lashed out, insulting Lily. After this their friendship, as far as Lily was concerned, was over.
Severus however felt more than mere friendship towards Lily, he loved her and continued to do so even after she would no longer speak to him.
Severus was an angry, neglected, bullied teenager who didn't really have anyone to turn to after losing his friendship with Lily. He was recruited by the evil revolutionary Lord Voldemort soon after finishing Hogwarts.
He overheard a prophecy by Trelawney (later the professor in divination at Hogwarts) which he retold to his master, Voldemort.
What Severus only learned later was that this prophecy made the Potters (Lily, her husband James and their infant son Harry) a major target. Severus realized to his Horror that Voldemort, a coldblooded murderer, was after Lily because of the information he himself had put forth.
Desperate to save Lily, Severus approached Dumbledore and became a spy for the Light (opposing Voldemort in secret). However Voldemort still found and managed to kill Lily and James.
Severus was devastated by her death and would never forgive himself for the part he had played in it.
He continued on working for Dumbledore, doing everything he could to help Lily's son Harry survive and eventually defeat Voldemort.
He spent the rest of his life after Lily's death on this quest for redemption and he idealized the memory of her to the point where she became an almost flawless saint in his eyes.
In the book and movie series Harry Potter, the characters Severus Snape and Lilly Potter were not together as a couple but they were bestfriends. Severus Snape befriended Lilly Potter when they were still kids, during the time when Lilly just recently discovered her own magical powers.
Yes they were best friends from a young age until they were fifteen when Snape called Lily a mud-blood when she was trying to defend him and Lily never forgave him. She was also angry at him because he wanted to be a Death Eater.
