You could say that beatniks were parent to hippies. Both groups were certainly alike in that both were determinedly non-conformist, or even anti-conformist, so while they all dressed alike, they all dressed differently from the people they weren't conforming with, which was anybody identified as part of the established culture, which they called the Establishment, man.
Both groups liked beards and long hair and any kind of music which appeared non-conformist. Horrified conformists suspected both beatniks and hippies didn't wash themselves.
Flowers were popular with both groups, and hippies were especially known for giving them away to Establishment people as a token of peace. This practice became upopular with the Establishment people, who mostly grew the flowers.
Both groups did grow some plants, but not the kind you see in Establishment gardens and parks.
San Francisco was hugely identified with hippies in the 1960s, while England was rather proud of its beatniks and, later, extremely proud of its mods, who were almost frighteningly Establishment and became a Tourist Attraction, especially in London.
Yves Saint Laurent featured beatnik clothing in at least one of his collections, but nobody liked it. The Establishment wouldn't buy it, and the non-conformists thought it was conformist and capitalist, and they couldn't afford it anyway. Paris, which pretty well invented non-conformists, the Establishment, and Style, and is still in charge of the last two, absolutely hated the stuff and Saint Laurent nearly died of shame, and had to join the army for three weeks with a view to fighting in Algeria. He didn't learn from this, and went on to invent the safari suit.
Australians invented their own non-conformists in the late nineteen fifties; they called the male ones bodgies and the female ones widgies.
Like beatniks, bodgies and widgies were held to be vaguely threatening, and they hung around outside milk bars looking frighteningly tough. I believe they all died out through sheer embarrassment; certainly, I've never met an elderly Australian who'll admit to having been either a bodgie or a widgie.
Surfies came later in Australia, as elsewhere, and you do sometimes meet old folk with long hair in ponytails below their bald patches who proudly admit to having been a top surfie. Unfortunately, many of the old surfing records have been lost, but we believe them anyway.
Surfies were neither tough nor threatening, but some had flowers painted on their surfboards and on their motor vehicles, especially Volkswagens. Surfies were sort of transitional hippies and nearly harmless but, sadly, many died out from fibreglass before they discovered that while fibreglass looked like plastic it was really tiny little bits of glass which weren't good to breathe in.
It is known for its Hippy era. In the 60's, beatniks moved there looking for cheaper rent. Famous tenants are Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and Jefferson Starship. Filled with old Victorian Homes that are now stores and surrounded by parks, it was the place that hippies migrated too.
You must have 20 megalevel digimon and have beatniks the gm

Yes, they chanted Herbert, and why is because the name is synonymous with a character referenced by Spock in his explanation to Kirk, of a man named Herbert who was rigid in his thinking and limited knowledge. They were taunting Kirk for being "the man" and "the establishment" in this ridiculous period of the 60's where TV (writers who were obviously much older than the real hippies of that era) often patronizingly ridiculed the youth of that era.
Yes
Hippies were associated with countercultural movements in the 1960s and embraced peace, love, and harmony. Beatniks were associated with the beat generation of the 1950s and were more focused on literary pursuits and questioning mainstream society. While both groups were nonconformists, beatniks were more intellectual and focused on existential questions, while hippies were more about communal living and rejecting materialism.
The Beatniks of the 1950's preceded the Hippies of the 1960's.

Teenage gangs in the 1950 and beatniks
The Beatniks were famous for starting a literature youth subculture movement in the 1950's and 1960's. Three of the Beatniks names are Jack, Allen, and William.
The Hippie Movement started in San Francisco, California and spread across most of the US during the late 60s and early 70s. Unlike the Beatniks, there were no real leaders of the Hippie Movement. The Beatniks were basically an intellectual movement that rejected the norms of society. The Hippies simply preferred an alternate lifestyle from the mainstream and had radical beliefs dealing with love, drug usage, war, and lifestyle. In that respect you could say that the Hippies boycotted the mainstream. Hippies came from all different backgrounds but all were young and many came from wealthy families. Some rejected their parent's lifestyle while others were simply outcasts of society and could only fit in with the Hippie population. Timothy Leary became the spokesman for the Hippies concerning drug usage. He favored the use of LSD and his famous admonition to the youth of America was "tune in, turn on, and drop out." Bob Dylan became the major symbol and spokesman of Hippie culture as well as other singers, like Janis Joplin.
