Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin.
The four houses were founded by the following four renown witches, and wizards: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. At first, the four founders hand picked the students for their house. Gryffindor chose students who showed bravery, and confidence. Slytherin chose students who showed ambition, and chose mostly by blood purity. Hufflepuff chose students who were hard working, and loyalty. And finally, Rowena Ravenclaw chose students based on creativity, intelligence and wisdom. All houses have rivalry between one another, but they all usually get along. All houses have a Quidditch team, and an hourglass that keeps track of points lost and gained throughout the school year.
There are four different Houses at Hogwarts school.
The first is Gryffindor. Gryffindor is named after the wizard Godric Gryffindor, who was one of the four founders of Hogwarts. The place were Harry Potter's parrents lived (Lily & James Potter), is also named after him (Godric's Hollow). Gryffindor is also the house James, Lily, Sirius, Remus, Harry, Hermione and Ron are in.) Also Gryffindor is known for the Gryffindor sword (which is a goblin-made sword). Also, each House has an mascot Gryffindor's logo is a lion, a roaring lion. Each House also has a house ghost. Gryffindor's is called Nearly Headless Nick.
Second is Ravenclaw. Ravenclaw is named after Rowena Ravenclaw, who just like Gryffindor was famously gifted and also one of the founders of Hogwarts. She is also known for her diadem (a sort of tiara) that grants the wearer cleverness and creativity. Luna Lovegood and Cho Chang are Ravenclaws. Ravenclaws mascot is a eagle. Their house ghost is called The Grey Lady, and was Rowena Ravenclaw's daughter, Helena Ravenclaw.
The third is Hufflepuff. Hufflepuff is named after Helga Hufflepuff. She was famously gifted witch known for her goodness. Hufflepuff House is known for being loyal, fair, and hardworking. Cedric Diggory was a Hufflepuff. Huffelpuffs mascot is a badger, and their House ghost is called The Fat Friar.
And the last is Slytherin. Slytherin is named after Salazaar Slytherin. Just like Godric, Rowena and Helga, Salazaar was a famous and very talented wizard, but a bad/dark one. Salazaar is the one who didn't want to allow Muggleborns ("Mudbloods") to be educated at Hogwarts. Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle are in that house, and Severus Snape is Head of Slytherin House. Slytherin's logo is a snake, because Salazaar Slytherin was a Parselmouth (could talk to snakes), just like Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort. Their House ghost is called The Bloody Baron, and he is actually the murderer of Ravenclaw's House ghost, who he was in love with.
At the beginning of each year the sorting hat is placed on each student in their first year. It divides them into the houses Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin (if that's how you spell them).
Gryffindors are brave, bold and always put others before themselves.
Ravenclaws are intelligent and rarely get a question wrong.
Hufflepuffs are loyal and always do their best.
Slytherins are cunning, arrogant and all death eaters have came from this house (excluding Peter Pettigrew).
