He attempts to steal their fortune several times with many different plans, each time he was however, thwarted by the children.

Yes he was. There are pictures of the actual Count Olaf as a child and an adult in the "Unauthorized Autobiography". He also turns up in some older newspaper articles if you keep an eye out.
