I have never tried it with gum, but nail polish remover works great for a lot of things. You must be careful though, it can bleach whatever you are trying to remove the gum from. There is a cleaning substance called "Goo-gone" that works really well for stuff like this too.
A Sharpie and nail polish remover have the same chemicals in them. Nail polish remover has the chemicals to remove that so it adapts also to Sharpies.

No, but it will remove the color instantly. Unless you are trying to get it off of something white, it will only ruin it. Better to use finger nail polish remover. The polish remover then can be washed with soap and water.

You can use vinegar, lemon juice, or rubbing alcohol as alternatives to nail polish remover to help remove nail polish. However, keep in mind that these alternatives may not work as effectively as nail polish remover.
