I use a wooden spoons for cooking because they to not scrape the surface of metal and non-stick cookware. Also, they tend not to warp in extreme heat like plastic spoons, and are generally durable and reliable.

Also, many people believe that bacteria grows faster on plastic and metal spoons. Wooden spoons are biodegradable and they tend to be a good shape for stirring!

While you could use a serving spoon and achieve the same results, a wooden spoon is easier to get the mixture off of than metal. The density of the wood also makes stirring easier. Plastic could also be used.
